Eddie Hearn has revealed Bob Arum called him to try and make Tyson Fury vs Anthony Joshua happen next before declaring AJ will be back out in action in July. The Matchroom Boxing promoter was at the centre of exhausting negotiations with the Gypsy King’s camp on two separate occasions before the heavyweight landscape was thrown up into the air much to the frustration of fans around the world.
But now there is a genuine chance that Fury vs Joshua could happen next – providing AJ and his team is willing to jump straight into that fight.
Negotiations for the undisputed heavyweight world championship fight between Fury and Oleksandr Usyk recently collapsed meaning the Gypsy King is now scouting around for an opponent.
Now Joshua is on his radar despite his radio silence and Hearn has now received a call from promoter Arum to try and get the wheels in motion. Still he is undecided on his next move with AJ.
“We’ve just got to decide what type of fight we want for July,” Hearn told iFL TV. “Do we go straight into a massive fight now? Bob Arum phoned me the other day, which was quite a surprise. Just talking about AJ Fury, he said ‘what are you thinking?’
“And I said ‘I don’t know. We’re all up for discussing the fight. I don’t think there will be a significant site fee in July, but we’re still willing to look at the numbers, or if you want to wait and do it later in the year, we’re up for that too’.
“Who knows what’s going to happen with Usyk, with [Deontay] Wilder. We’re going to have to see, but AJ’s going to fight in July, 100 per cent.”
Joshua indicated after his victory over Jermaine Franklin that he would be prepared to lock horns with Fury next.
But if the two-time heavyweight world champion is to adopt a more logical approach, he will seek to continue building momentum under new coach Derrick James via competitive fights.
