Jigawa ranks first among open defecation-free states

Water-Resources-Minister-Suleiman-Adamu

From Charity Nwakaudu, Abuja

Minister of Water Resources, Suleiman Adamu has said that Jigawa State may emerge the first open defecation-free state in the country.

Adamu made this disclosure in Abuja at an interactive session with journalists yesterday.

The =minister stated that out of the 27 local government areas in the state, 26 local government areas are already open defecation-free.

He added that plans were already in process to celebrate the state as the first state to be open defecation-free, closely followed by Katsina State with 24 local governments out of 34 local government areas already free of open defecation.

Adamu disclosed that about 17 governors in the country have signed a pledge card to support the campaign against open defecation and its eradication.

Adamu said that the ministry is working assiduously to coordinate activities on improvement of water delivery.

The minister stated that efforts of the ministry have not been commensurate to the right progress because of the growth in population.

“We have to double the effort beyond population growth, especially in the state for our efforts to be seen,” he said. He called on the governors to ensure they participate adequately in the on-going programme.
