‘Sotonye’, the name leaves a sour taste in the mouth. After I stormed out of the Restaurant the last time I had a sit down with the ‘witch’, she had her pound of flesh by orchestrating a fainting spell that had everyone in the Restaurant running around in panic because of her condition. Rick flew Sotonye to the United States where she was pampered and stayed at a Spa for the rest of her pregnancy term. Rick visited constantly, I remembered disparagingly.
You are probably wondering how I know this. He travelled at the flimsiest of excuse and she never failed to put it up on social media; of course I check her page! I was sent an invite by Sotonye for the Baby’s naming that took place in Rick’s family’s palatial Country home and as the Lawyer to the Matriarch of the family my presence was required. I attended as was expected, I have always prided myself as being a professional to the core so against advice by my ‘support squad’ I attended with them coming along for ‘moral support’.
As I reminisced I went to sit on the rocking chair I just acquired which looked very much like the one I have in my bedroom and gave in to the memory of what happened at the naming. I remember that day vividly like yesterday; I dutifully put on the grey gown I had in mind and swivelled around for assessment from Jasmine’s critical eye. Any time I had to meet Sotonye, a suspicious battle glint always lurked around the corner of Jasmine’s eyes and this occasion was not different. With hind sight I am grateful Jasmine made us go shopping. “No need to look drab because you are the family Solicitor, Counsel,” she teased as she chatted on to help me relax the only way Jasmine can. She continued “I happen to be an aficionado of Men, as you know so you are talking to the best there is, I want you to knock Tiger off, feet first,” she laughed seductively, using her pet name for Rick.
“I don’t want to seduce Rick at his baby dedication, who does that?” I protested. “I do!” She exclaimed, laughing sensuously. Jasmine selected a piece but not an ordinary one; chic, sexy and comfy stretch, sleeveless, figure-hugging, halter neck, black lace, Clubby like dress. I looked at myself in it and was speechless. We arrived at the venue a little late, course the girls wouldn’t stop gushing over me when we met at our take off point, Bola’s place because she lives on the Island. “My oh my Tobs; you look drop dead gorgeous,” Bola exclaimed when she saw me.
“You look beautiful Tobs,” Kaycee said in her quiet shy voice. “Whoa, who do we have here? You give sexy a new meaning,” Zara growled after whistling in that her annoying unladylike fashion. I gave her a dirty look but instead of feeling offended she blew a kiss, I couldn’t help but laugh, the girl is incorrigible! There was festivity in the air when we arrived. Everything spoke class and money. Obviously Rick had been on the lookout because he was right beside us within five minutes of our arrival. When he looked at me I felt like a sultry temptress, my heart was fluttering none stop.
I hated the effect he had on me. After locking my gaze he kissed the girls on both cheeks without taking his eyes off me and when it was finally my turn, he looked deep in my eyes studying me with a predator’s unwavering attention. Without saying a word, he took my hand and kissed the centre of my palm which sent shivers down my spine. I was appalled at my wanton behaviour. I felt like the scarlet woman. Just then a familiar hateful voice interrupted rudely “oh there you are Baby, ‘R.J’ needs your attention and you know how cranky he gets when you are away for too long.” She turned to us and continued, “The other day he wouldn’t stop crying until Baby Boo crawled into bed with us. I think he just wanted his father,” she concluded her eyes flashing fire obviously not liking what she saw when she looked at me; as always the feeling was mutual. “Hello Sotonye, you look well I said grudgingly because it was true. She didn’t look like someone who just had a baby, her flawless skin radiated and she looked absolutely stunning in her sexy backless Bead Dress.
I looked up in gratitude to God, that I heeded Jasmine’s advice. She smiled icily “Come darling, Tobs is not a stranger let’s go welcome our other guests to our Home,” Sotonye said with sweet sarcasm. “R.J? Our home? Baby Boo?” Zara mimicked with a blank stare as soon as they left. We all burst into laughter. “You dey try oh Tobs,” Zara said contemptuously “but I will teach this boyfriend snatching, two timing b**ch a lesson; just watch me,” Zara concluded, a mischievous, malicious gleam in her eyes. My friends will not kill me but they rock. I’m tired, can’t write anymore, going to bed. Tell you the rest next week
