The Director of Finance and Business Support at the Lagos Continental Hotels, Abimbola Adekoya, has affirmed that women are potent resource in driving growth, innovation, and excellence in the hospitality industry.
Speaking at an event to herald this year’s International Women’s Day, Adekoya emphasised that women’s empowerment is a business necessity in all endeavours.
“When women are empowered, they drive growth, innovation, and excellence, Adekoya said, noting that Continental Hotels Group is committed to gender equality, with women making up 35 per cent of top management.
Adekoya, however, noted that there is still much work to be done, with women underrepresented in operationally intensive roles such as executive chefs and hotel general managers.
“It’s not a lack of capability, it’s a lack of opportunity,” she said.
To address this, Adekoya advocated structured training, mentorship, and sponsorship programmes, adding: “We must create pathways for qualified and interested women.”
She emphasised that growth often happens in motion, and confidence is built in the doing.
Adekoya also highlighted the importance of partnership and collaboration in achieving women’s empowerment.
Her words: “Men are supportive, and we appreciate their allyship. Together, we can create a more inclusive and equitable industry.”
In sharing her personal experience, the Director of Finance and Business Support said: “I have not experienced harassment or intimidation in the workplace, but I firmly believe that any individual who feels harassed must speak up and report through the appropriate channels.”
Adekoya noted that the International Women’s Day is a celebration of progress, but also a call to action.
Adekoya’s message was echoed in the company’s activities to mark International Women’s Day, which included conversations, health talks and activities that strengthen their community.
