With a £35 million offer from Saudi Pro League team Al-Ahli luring him away from the Premier League, Brentford striker Ivan Toney must make a crucial decision on his future.
While Brentford rejected the bid, the saga sparks debate: should Toney prioritise financial gain or chase peak performance?
Former Premier League striker Chris Sutton urges Toney to stay put. ‘At this stage of his career, I think Saudi is a no-no,’ he declared on BBC’s Monday Night Club. Sutton emphasises Toney’s proven Premier League talent, highlighting his peak physicality and well-rounded skills. ‘You can have all the money in the world,’ he argued, ‘but this is Ivan Toney at his peak.’

Sutton advises Toney to consider a lucrative career move down the road. ‘Why doesn’t he just wait another season and then get a move?’ He feels that Toney’s signing should be coveted by Premier League clubs, particularly Manchester United, who are in dire need of a striker.
This sentiment is echoed by former England player Izzy Christiansen. ‘From a footballing point of view, why has no-one signed Toney?’ she asked, pointing to his performance in Euro 2020 and recent form.
Thomas Frank, the manager of Brentford, says a move is ‘not close,’ but he does acknowledge a possible future exit. Toney’s departure, he concedes, appears to be more a matter of ‘when’ than ‘if.’
