Israel intensifies strikes, plans deeper ground operations in Lebanon

Israel has increased its military force against Hezbollah in southern Lebanon, indicating plans for expanded ground operations as the conflict continues to escalate.

The Israeli military said it had launched a “wide wave of strikes” targeting Hezbollah infrastructure, while also preparing for a deeper and more sustained ground offensive. Chief of staff Eyal Zamir described the campaign as the beginning of a prolonged operation.

“The operation against Hezbollah has only begun… This is a prolonged operation,” Zamir said, adding that forces are being positioned for an organised advance involving both ground troops and airstrikes.

As part of the escalation, Israeli forces targeted key bridges over the Litani River, which they said were being used by Hezbollah fighters to move personnel and weapons.
Lebanese state media reported that multiple strikes caused extensive damage to infrastructure, including a major bridge near the city of Tyre.

Lebanese President Joseph Aoun condemned the attacks, describing them as a “flagrant violation” of the country’s sovereignty and warning that the destruction of critical infrastructure could signal preparations for a wider ground invasion.

The conflict has intensified since Hezbollah began launching rockets into Israel in early March, triggering retaliatory strikes and cross-border clashes.

Both sides have exchanged heavy fire, with Israeli forces carrying out incursions into southern Lebanon and Hezbollah targeting Israeli troops and positions near the border.

Casualties have continued to mount. Lebanese authorities say over 1,000 people have been killed and more than one million displaced in the past three weeks of fighting. The Israeli military has also reported losses among its troops, as well as civilian casualties from rocket fire.

Israel has warned residents of parts of southern Lebanon to evacuate, stating its intention to create a buffer zone along the border to protect communities in northern Israel.

As global demands for calm continue amid mounting humanitarian and economic concerns, the escalating violence has sparked worries of a wider regional conflict.
