At just 22 years old, Miss Maureen Chiwenitem Onuh has made history by graduating with First Class Honours in Aerospace Engineering from the University of Wolverhampton, UK.
Her outstanding academic record earned her the prestigious FBC Manby Bowdler Prize for the highest GPA in her field.
Earning a First Class in Aerospace Engineering—a highly demanding discipline focused on designing and testing aircraft, spacecraft, and satellites—highlights Maureen’s exceptional talent and determination. Her achievement as the top graduating student underscores her brilliance and perseverance.
Born in Dublin to Nigerian parents, Dr. Echeta Onuh and Mrs. Littlemary Maureen Onuh of Ndiowu Town, Anambra State, Nigeria, Maureen’s educational journey spans three countries. She completed primary education in Dublin, secondary education in Nigeria, and university studies in the UK.
Reflecting on her choice of field, Maureen shared:
“I’ve always been fascinated by how machines fly. Aerospace Engineering requires creativity, precision, and analytical thinking. Beyond personal interest, I see great potential for Nigeria to develop its aerospace sector, which relies heavily on imports. I want to contribute to building indigenous capacity in aircraft design, satellites, and drone technology.”
She credits her parents for laying a strong foundation:
“My parents, both highly educated with postgraduate degrees, instilled discipline, integrity, and a tireless work ethic. My father, with a PhD in Law and multiple advanced degrees, was my greatest academic mentor. Growing up under his guidance taught me to approach complex concepts systematically—skills I applied throughout my aerospace studies.”
Maureen’s academic excellence has opened new opportunities. She has received an offer to pursue a Master’s in Robotics at the University of Birmingham, a leading UK institution within the Russell Group.
She acknowledges that her journey was challenging but emphasizes resilience and strategic planning:
“Achieving the highest GPA required discipline, focus, and emotional resilience. It’s about working smart, managing time effectively, and maintaining quality over long hours. I approached it like a marathon—pacing myself while staying goal-oriented.”
Looking ahead, Maureen aspires to contribute to the global aerospace industry and advance Nigeria’s aerospace development. Her story serves as an inspiration for young women in STEM across Africa and beyond.
To young girls, especially from African or minority backgrounds, she offers this message: “You are more capable than you think. Engineering isn’t limited by gender or background. With passion and discipline, you can succeed. Surround yourself with supportive people, stay curious, and never shy away from taking up space where you are underrepresented.”
