Iran has escalated the ongoing regional conflict with a missile strike on Bahrain’s leading telecommunications firm, Batelco, which hosts infrastructure for Amazon Web Services, marking the first direct attack on facilities linked to major US technology companies.

The strike targeted Batelco’s headquarters in Hamala on Wednesday, causing structural damage and power disruptions across several data centres.

The facility is a critical hub for cloud services in the region, supporting operations linked to global tech infrastructure.

An Amazon spokesperson confirmed that recent disruptions to its services in Bahrain and the UAE were linked to drone activity and escalating hostilities in the region. The company advised clients to migrate workloads to other locations as the situation deteriorates.

The attack follows earlier threats by Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, which listed several global technology firms, including Microsoft, Google, and Apple, as potential targets amid intensifying confrontation with the United States and Israel.

Tensions have risen sharply after sustained US-Israeli strikes reportedly killed top Iranian military and political figures, prompting Tehran to warn of retaliatory actions against American-linked assets worldwide.

This latest development signals a shift in the conflict, extending beyond traditional military targets to critical digital and commercial infrastructure, with potential global implications for data security and cloud services.

Analysts warn that further attacks on technology infrastructure could disrupt international business operations and deepen the economic fallout from the war already impacting energy markets and global trade routes.
