US National Security Communications Adviser John Kirby has warned of the possibility of an impending Iranian strike on Israel in the coming days, adding that the attack “may come with little or no warning.”

Speaking at a video briefing on Thursday, Kirby said that although the US is actively trying to defuse the situation, it is nonetheless ready for any future hostilities.

Washington has increased its military posture in the region to defend Israel if needed, and it has used intermediaries to convey its worries to Tehran.

In April, the US led a coalition of five countries, including Israel, in intercepting 300 Iranian drones and missiles during an attack by Tehran. Despite these efforts, Kirby acknowledged that the US is uncertain about the nature of any new Iranian attack.

To address rising tensions and avoid a wider war, British Foreign Minister David Lammy and French Foreign Minister Stéphane Séjourné are set to visit Israel on Friday. The US believes that completing a ceasefire and hostage agreement for Gaza will deter Iran or Hezbollah from retaliating for the recent assassination of important Hezbollah and Hamas figures by the Israelis.

Israel and Iran-backed Hezbollah in Lebanon and Hamas in Gaza have been at war since October 7, 2023. Thousands of residents have been displaced by the conflict.

Amos Hochstein, the US special envoy, recently travelled to Beirut in an effort to ease tensions between Israel and Hezbollah. Kirby pointed out that, although Hezbollah’s rhetoric is still strong, there are no clear signs that the group wants to launch a new conflict.

The IDF, meanwhile, has significantly weakened Hamas’s military capabilities in Gaza, although the threat from the group remains.
