Iranian state media reported that Iran launched a missile at a US oil vessel in the Gulf on Thursday, marking the most recent Iranian assault on the region’s energy sector.
Iran’s Revolutionary Guards stated in a statement broadcast on state television that the US oil vessel “was hit by a missile in the north of the Persian Gulf” and “is currently on fire.”
The Guards claimed to have “full control” of the Strait of Hormuz, a crucial oil and gas transit route that connects the Gulf to the Indian Ocean, at the time of the incident, which has not been independently verified.

Iranian Foreign Minister Abas Araghchi, meanwhile, had earlier warned that the United States would “bitterly regret” the precedent set and accused it of committing an atrocity by sinking an Iranian military ship off the coast of Sri Lanka.
“The US has perpetrated an atrocity at sea, 2,000 miles away from Iran’s shores. Frigate Dena, a guest of India’s Navy carrying almost 130 sailors, was struck in international waters without warning,” he posted on X.
“Mark my words: The US will come to bitterly regret the precedent it has set”, he added.
