Iran’s military has threatened to retaliate after a US naval destroyer opened fire on an Iranian-flagged cargo vessel in the Gulf of Oman, raising fresh concerns over escalating tensions in the region.

“We warn that the armed forces of the Islamic Republic of Iran will soon respond and retaliate against this armed piracy and the US military,” a spokesperson for Iran’s central command, Khatam Al-Anbiya, said.

The official also accused Washington of breaching the ceasefire arrangement, stating that the United States had “violated the ceasefire” that has been in place since April 8.

The clash reportedly occurred on Sunday after the vessel, identified as Touska, attempted to evade a US naval blockade on Iranian shipping routes.

US President Donald Trump confirmed the incident, saying the ship ignored warnings to stop before action was taken.

“After the Iranian vessel, Touska, ignored warnings to stop, the guided missile destroyer USS Spruance stopped them right in their tracks by blowing a hole in the engineroom,” Trump said.

“Right now, U.S. Marines have custody of the vessel,” he added, “and are seeing what’s on board!”

The development comes amid rising tension in the Strait of Hormuz, a critical global shipping route that has faced repeated disruptions since the conflict involving the US, Iran and Israel intensified.

Iran had briefly reopened the strait following a ceasefire involving Israel and Hezbollah, but shut it again after the United States maintained its blockade, further tightening pressure on global energy flows.
