Iran rocked by 4.4 magnitude earthquake amid Israeli strikes

Iran

The United States Geological Survey (USGS) has reported a 4.4 magnitude earthquake in the Gerash region of southern Iran.

According to the agency, the tremor occurred at a depth of around 10 kilometres (6.21 miles) on Tuesday.

Gerash is situated in an earthquake-prone area due to being positioned along the Zagros fold and thrust belt, where the Arabian and Eurasian tectonic plates collide.

The above is one of the most seismically active zones in the Middle East.

Per reports, vibrations resulting from the quake were experienced in several rural areas, but there were no casualties or major structural damage so far.

As the conflict escalates, Israel says it is launching “simultaneous strikes in Tehran and Beirut,” targeting Iranian military sites and the Iran-backed group Hezbollah.

The military stated that Israeli jets “will continue to strike against attempts to arm missile launchers” as well as “live fire array sites, missile launchers, and ballistic missiles”.
