Fresh tension in the Middle East escalated on Tuesday after reported US-Israeli strikes hit a synagogue in Tehran, leaving the structure completely destroyed, according to local media.
Iranian outlets, including Mehr news agency and Shargh newspaper, said the attack targeted the Rafi-Nia Synagogue, a known gathering place for Jewish communities in the country. Shargh reported that “according to preliminary information, the Rafi-Nia Synagogue… was completely destroyed in this morning’s attacks.”
Although Iran is predominantly a Shia Muslim country, it officially recognises minority religions such as Judaism, Christianity, and Zoroastrianism. Still, the Jewish population has significantly declined over the years, particularly after the 1979 Islamic Revolution, when many fled the country.

Notably, the synagogue was described as “one of the most important places for Khorasan Jews to gather and celebrate,” highlighting its cultural and religious relevance to the shrinking Jewish community in the region.
Meanwhile, the strike comes amid broader military exchanges involving Israel and the United States, with Iran already accusing both countries of coordinated attacks on strategic and civilian-linked locations.
While there has been no independent verification of the extent of the destruction, the development further raises concerns about the widening scope of the conflict and the growing risk to minority communities caught in the crossfire.
