To commemorate the 2022 International Family Day, the Federal Government has promised to empower 30 indigent households.
Minister of Humanitarian Affairs, Disaster and Social Development, Sadiya Umar Farouq, noted that the gesture was to improve the living standard of poor families.
The United Nations General Assembly in its Resolution 47/237, in 1993 set aside May 15th, to observe globally by member states as International Day of Families.
The theme for this year’s celebration is ‘Families and Urbanisation.
The rationale for the day is to create awareness and increase knowledge of the socio-economic and demographic process affecting families around the world.
In a statement yesterday by the Ministry’s Deputy Director of Information, Rhoda Ishaku Iliya, the minister said some of her achievements has been family tracing and re-unification, empowerment, marital dispute resolution, family case work management and provision of grants.
Farouq implored citizens to dedicate this year’s celebration to finding lasting solutions to issues affecting the survival and proper development of Nigerian families.
She commended the support of different international organisations, Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs) and stakeholders for their contributions towards the observance of the Day.
She appealed to states, local government and Nongovernmental Organization (NGOs) to mobilise resources as well as develop poverty-lifting programmes to celebrate the day.
In addition, she enjoined families to monitor the activities of their children to ensure that they are not lured and recruited into crimes.
“I call on all Nigerian families to embark on sustained vigilance and prayers towards bringing to an end the current security challenges facing our nation and displaced communities,” she added.
