This comes amid growing global debates on AI’s integration into classrooms, with Nigeria pushing for policies that balance innovation and human-centered values in its education sector, First Lady, Oluremi Tinubu, has called for deep reflection on the theme of International Day of Education 2026, “AI and Education: Preserving Human Agency in a World of Automation,” emphasising that technology must serve humanity while education equips Nigerians to lead in an AI-driven era.

International Day of Education is celebrated annually on January 24. It was proclaimed by the United Nations General Assembly on December 3, 2018, to highlight education’s role in promoting peace, sustainable development, and the achievement of Sustainable Development Goal 4 (inclusive and equitable quality education for all).

In a message she personally signed, Mrs. Tinubu described education as “the most powerful tool for acquiring knowledge, values, creativity, and ethical judgment needed to thrive in a rapidly evolving, technology-driven world.”

She stressed the need to keep humans at the forefront of technological advancement, warning against reversing priorities. “As we embrace artificial intelligence and innovation, we must ensure that technology serves humanity, not the other way around,” the First Lady stated. “Humans must remain the drivers of AI, harnessing innovation while preserving the values that define us and sustain development.”

Highlighting Nigeria’s commitment, Mrs. Tinubu reaffirmed the nation’s focus on quality education. “In Nigeria, our priority is to invest in quality, inclusive education that empowers our children and youth to think critically, act responsibly, and embrace the future with confidence and compassion,” she added.
