Inspector bags death sentence for murder of phone dealer

From Paul Osuyi

A police inspector attached to the Delta State Police Command, Ubi Ebri, has been sentenced to death by the state High Court in Asaba.

The court presided over by Justice C.D. Diai had convicted Ebri for killing a telephone dealer, one Emmanuel Onyeka Ibeh.

Ibeh was shot dead on April 5, 2023 at a police checkpoint, along Ugbolu Road in the full glare of his newly wedded and pregnant wife. The couple was driving to Asaba when the police team on stop-and-search duty flagged down the car.

The deceased waited in his car to be attended to, but the operatives were not forthcoming, hence, he decided to move only to be gunned down by the convicted inspector. The incident sparked outrage in Asaba as youths across the capital city protested the murder, parading the body of the deceased along the streets. Commissioner of police in the state at the time, Ali Mohammed Ari, assuaged the protesting youths, assuring that the culprit would be arrested and made to face justice.

The prosecution led by a director from the state Ministry of Justice, Mr. E.H Edema, had informed the court that Ebri was a member of the police team on the fateful day at the checkpoint, where the incident happened.

Speaking after the judgement, Edema described it as a landmark, noting that “justice has been served in this case to the deceased and the society at large.” Mr Fidel Ifeanyi Ibeh, elder brother of the deceased, who witnessed the judgement, also commended the court for delivering justice to his family.
