The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), has expressed sadness over the passing away of its Ogun State Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC), Olaniyi Ijalaye, who died in Abuja.
The Ogun REC slumped and died in his hotel room in after attending the commission’s quarterly meeting with RECs at its headquarters in Abuja to deliberate on the forthcoming off-cycle elections in Edo and Ondo states yesterday.
Ijalaye, who hails from Ondo, was appointed the Ogun State REC in March 2022, following the transfer of Olusegun Agbaje, his successor, to Lagos.
Reacting formally to the tragic incident, the commission in a statement by Sam Olumekun, National Commissioner and Chairman, Information and Voter Education Committee, extended its heartfelt condolences to his immediate family and pray that God would grant him eternal rest. While describing him as a man of integrity who exhibited hard work and conscientious, the statement reads; “It is with deep sadness and a sense of loss that INEC announces the death of Mr. Olaniyi Ijalaye, the REC for Ogun State, on Monday August 19 after attending the regular quarterly meeting of the commission in Abuja.
