The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has disowned a fraudulent online publication claiming to be an official announcement about governorship candidates in six states, warning Nigerians against believing or sharing the information.

The commission listed the affected states as Zamfara, Gombe, Delta, Plateau, Yobe and Kano, insisting that the purported notice did not originate from it.

In a public notice, INEC categorically dismissed the publication as fake, urging members of the public to disregard the information.

“The Commission wishes to categorically inform the general public that the publication is FAKE and did not originate from INEC,” the notice stated.

The electoral body also rejected claims that it had issued a special announcement concerning governorship candidates in the six states.

INEC urged Nigerians to exercise caution when encountering electoral information online and to verify such reports through its official communication platforms before sharing them.

“The public is advised to rely solely on official notices, press releases, and other information issued through the Commission’s verified communication channels,” the commission said.

It listed its official channels as its website, inecnigeria.org; Facebook page, INEC Nigeria; X and Instagram accounts, @inecnigeria; and news portal, inecnews.com.

For enquiries and further clarification, members of the public can contact the commission through its call centre on 0700-2255-4632, short code 4632, telephone numbers 090844444333 and 09050858629, or email address [[email protected]](mailto:[email protected]).

INEC reiterated its commitment to providing accurate electoral information and called on Nigerians to remain vigilant against fraudulent publications.

“The Commission reiterates its commitment to keeping the public accurately informed and urges everyone to disregard the fraudulent publication and obtain electoral information only from INEC’s official communication channels,” the notice added.
