The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Cross River State, has destroyed invalid and worthless items in its office in Calabar.
Carrying out the exercise, the INEC Resident Electoral Commissioner, Dr Alalibo Johnson, said the items were worn-out and of no more economic value to the commission.
Represented by the Head of Operations, Mr Kenneth Agwu, Johnson said the items were worn-out and of no more economic value to the commission.
Speaking to newsmen, the INEC Boss said the destruction of such materials became expedient due to the depreciation that has taken place in the items over time, referring to the materials as “invalid, worthless and of no economic value.
“So, the exercise was to clean up the storage so as to receive new electoral materials in preparation for the forthcoming 2023 general elections which prompted the commission to seek clearance to destroy them. Besides, it was a nationwide exercise.

“As you can see the items are no longer useful, what will you use the condemned laptop battery for? All the materials are not needed anymore rather than occupying space that would have been used for other valuables, we have to burn them,” he stated.
Items burnt include 1,203 pieces of customised aprons, 10 pieces of rechargeable lights, 50 party agent identity cards, 29 bad computer accessories and 5 empty toner cartridges
Others are 200 expired communication cables, 234 old finger scanners, empty card reader cartoons and122 pieces of election bags.
The exercise was supervised by the representatives of INEC, Ministry of Environment, Calabar, Nigerian Police, Department of State Security and the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corp.
