• Say commission’s performance
From Ogbonnaya Ndukwe, Aba
Igbo Lawyers Association (ILA), an umbrella body of practicing lawyers of Igbo origin, has lambasted the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), for conducting what it described as a sham and abysmal election on February 25.
It alleged the outcome of the polls was an arrangement between the All Progressives Congress (APC) and INEC.
Chairman of ILA, Chief Chuks Muoma (SAN), told Daily Sun that the electoral management body, did not carry out its assigned responsibility, going by the Electoral Act of 2022.
“They’ll be a lot of election petitions due to its poor handling of the polls. The conduct of INEC is woeful; that is the best vocabulary for it,” he said.
Muoma questioned the rationale for the APC candidate, Bola Tinubu claim that it was his turn to rule as if the entire country belonged to him.
For Muoma, Peter Obi and Atiku Abubakar were better candidates for the election even as he described Tinubu as being to old for the job.
On the large turnout of voters in the South East, despite the threats by some clandestine groups against voters, the senior lawyer described it as “very encouraging.”
“We have to identify ourselves with the election, or else we will be marginalized and discounted. Whatever happens, we still belong to the Nigerian nation and have to fight for our rights and our way through. I think we are in the system, so we should defend our position and promote our interests within the system,” he said.
