The just-concluded Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) Championship put together by the African Fighters Championship (AFC) held at the National Stadium in Surulere, Lagos, has been described as a major success by participants and organisers alike.
The four-day event, which ran from September 11 to 14, featured over 70 fighters from across the country. It was organised by Raad Aswani of the AFC World Series, who expressed satisfaction with the quality of performances and organisation.
Speaking to journalists on Sunday, Aswani said his goal of using the tournament to spotlight emerging MMA talent in Nigeria had been achieved. He also pledged further investments to ensure the sport’s continued growth.
“The quality of production was rock solid. The fighters were brilliant, while officiating, medicals and government presence all contributed to a hugely successful tournament,” Aswani said.
He added that the success of this year’s edition highlighted Nigeria’s potential to become a hub for elite MMA fighters, especially with continued funding and government support.
“The future is very bright. This year’s edition was well delivered and electrifying, especially with government backing, which made the whole experience worthwhile,” he added.
Aswani revealed that plans are underway to expand the tournament regionally, creating more opportunities to discover and develop top-tier Nigerian athletes.
In the ring, several fighters made their mark. Jonah emerged victorious in his category and praised the organisers for their professionalism and dedication.
“It was a great championship and win. I give kudos to the organisers,” Jonah said.
Stephen Takpe, who faced Jonah in the bout, acknowledged defeat and remained optimistic about his future in the sport.
“It was my first amateur tournament, giving me the exposure I need. I look forward to more opportunities like this in the future,” Takpe noted.
Meanwhile, Victor Nwoke impressed in the 85kg category, securing two wins to advance to the third round. He thanked the organisers and commended their efforts in promoting MMA and giving visibility to emerging athletes.
The championship is seen as a significant step forward for MMA in Nigeria, with athletes, fans, and stakeholders optimistic about what lies ahead.
