The Imo State Police Command has arrested suspected gang members that abducted and killed a retired military chief, Major General Richard Duru, after collecting a ransom of $50,000 from him on 27/09/2023, at the Bishop’s Court Road, Uratta, Owerri North council area of the state.
Briefing newsmen, yesterday, the state Commissioner of Police, Aboki Danjuma, said the command’s Anti-Kidnapping Unit, led by CSP Oladimeji Odeyeyiwa, immediately commenced an instant manhunt for the syndicates, notorious on the command’s list, which, he said, led to the bursting of a criminal syndicate and other terror groups terrorising the people of the state.
He said Chukwunonso Emmanuel ‘M, a native of Uke in Idemili North L.G.A, Anambra State, was arrested in Lagos, while attempting to obtain a new plate number for the victim’s Mercedes Benz car. His confessions, he further disclosed, led to the arrest of two members of the gang, Okoroigwe Goodness, 24 years, ‘M’, and Innocent Ogu, 54 years, ‘m’.
The suspects, he added, confessed to the crime of kidnapping and murder of the retired Major General Duru.
Also, he said the suspects equally confessed to membership of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB)/Eastern Security Network (ESN).
In the same vein, the CP said 435 suspects were equally arrested for different crimes ranging from cultism, armed robbery, murder and others.
