The Imo State Zonal Coordinators of Mr Peter Obi, presidential Campaign Council, have advised the State Working Committee (SWC) of the Labour Party (LP) to embrace the new campaign Council structure set up in the State for the success of Obi’s ambition in 2023.
In a statement signed by the three zonal coordinators of Obi’s campaign council,Ifeanyi Olumba, Chief George Egu and Obinna Ibe respectively on Saturday, they argued that while a political party owns a candidate, a candidate own a campaign council.
The statement titled “Political party versus campaign council, peculiarities and common grounds” insisted that part and campaign council functions cooperatively as parallel lines that only meet at the end.
The statement further disclosed that the clarity became necessary, following a recent statement by the state Chairman of LP Ambrose Onyekwere disparaging the campaign council inaugurated by professor Pat Utomi.
However, the group in a counter statement, disclosed that the position of the LP chairman lack indepth understanding of the workings of political system.
The statement read, “arising from the letter written by the state LP chairman Dr Ambrose Onyekwere on the constitution of Peter Obi campaign council, it became necessary to make some clarifications.
“A political party owns it’s candidate, while a candidate owns it’s campaign council in every political setting.
“It is practically wrong for a political party to interfere with the functions of a candidate’s campaign council”, the release stated.
It further disclosed that in Imo situation, LP has a big role to market it’s presidential candidate, three senatorial candidate, 10 reps candidates and 27 state assembly candidates.
“We therefore, call on the leadership of LP to sheath their sword and fully embrace Peter Obi Presidential campaign council in all the states of the federation”, it stated.
