The governorship candidate of Labour Party in 11 November Imo state gubernotorial has decried the reprisal attacks on natives and residents of Umualumaku and Orieagu communites in Ehime Mbano Local Council of Imo State count losses over the reprisal attacks unleashed on them military men on Wednesday, following the killing of eight members of the Joint Security Task force by gunmen.
The irate soldiers and other sister security agencies invaded the two communities burnt down a section of the Orieagu market, as well as eatry and relaxation spots in the two communities.
Senator Achonu, who decried the ugly situation has urged President Bola Tinubu to intervene and save the lives of the people of the area from being killed.
Also, he urged Governor Hope Uzodimma to intervene and rebuild the homes, buildings and wares torched by the military officers.
Achonu, who hails from the area, made the demand after visiting the scenes yesterday.
He also, urged the General Officer Commanding the 82 Division Enugu; the Brigade Commander of 34 Field Artillery Brigade, Obinze, near Owerri; the Commissioner of Police in Imo State, among other security chiefs in the state, to call their officers to order and desist from unleashing reprisal attacks, setting ablaze vehicles, houses, shops, hotels and eatries in the community to vent their anger over the killing of no fewer than five security personnel on patrol duty in the area on Tuesday.
Achonu, also, alleged that the degree of insecurity in his area was orchestrated by some persons, targeting him to bring bad reputation in his political quest to govern the state.
He regretted that two of the deceased security officers had accompanied him and provided security during his recent political campaigns in Aboh Mbaise, Ezinihitte Mbaise and environs.
The LP governorship candidate disclosed that he had spent his money to acquired massive land opposite the scene where the security personnel were attacked and killed , essentially, to build a police station, regretting that he could not receive any encouraging response from the police authorities.
According to him, he also spent humongous amount of money to rebuild, furnish a nearby police area command near the vicinity, regretting that some hoodlums invaded the structure threw suspected dynamite and destroyed it. In the face of the setbacks, he felt frustrated that after donating his scarce resources, including repairing some of the Armoured Personnel Carriers (APCs), the outcome was not yielding security results.
He said: “The insecurity that happened is lawlessness in the society. It shows there is no rule of law in this country, not obeying the laws.
“I have been supporting police, the DSS, the military over the years. This is unbelievable that these happened.
“Two of the slain security officers accompanied us to Aboh Mbaise, Ezinihitte Mbaise, and Ngor Opkala.”
Speaking on the reprisal attacks, he said: “The GOC should call his boys to order. The essence of governance is to protect society. What is the essence of society if the governnent cannot provide security.
“Government should live by example. I am calling on Governor Hope Uzodimma, to rebuild these places, houses, shops- destroyed. They are not the ones who killed the security personnel. The President, Tinubu, should look into what is happening here and Imo State. President Tinubu is a product of democracy and he has enjoyed democracy. He should not allow these characters,” Achonu added.
