Gunmen yesterday killed two police officers on duty at Old Gariki road, Okigwe Local Government Area of Imo State. .
The officers said to be personel of Mopol 18, Owerri, were said to have been gruesomely murdered by hoodlums suspected to be members of the Eastern Security Network (ESN), who bombed their operational vehicle early in the morning.
Confirming the incident, the state police spokesman, Henry Okoye, in a statement, said that the officers were ambushed while on duty.
According to him, dynamite were used by the hoodlums to blow up the vehicles as they were engaged in a gun duel.
“The officers were ambushed in the early hours of today, 23/03/2024 while on patrol duties along old Gariki Road Okigwe by the disgruntled elements who threw dynamite on the officer’s patrol vehicle and engaged them in a protracted gunfight.
“In the process, two officers paid the ultimate price while four others survived the attack,” Okoye said.
However, the tactical team of the police command led by the state Commissioner of Police, Aboki Danjuma, alongside Commander Mopol 18 and 64, have visited the crime scene for on-the-spot assessment .
The CP has also tasked the operatives to go all out in synergy with other security agencies and hunt down the hoodlums responsible for the attack.
It would also be recalled that a local meat vendor was killed at Ohii in Owerri West LGA on Friday by gunmen.
