Imo State First Lady, Chioma Hope-Uzodinma, has championed the campaign for girl-child education and empowerment in the state and beyond, that will, expectedly, culminate in their empowerment.
The Imo First Lady who was represented by the Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Welfare, Hon. Nkechiyere Ugwu, at the launch of the campaign, said the intervention became necessary to sustain the momentum and the progress made over the years as regards women education and empowerment.
She stressed the need to ensure the campaign for education of girl-child is taken to every corner of the state, thus soliciting the support of all parents, teachers, common and religious leaders to the campaign.
Executive Secretary, National Commission for Mass Literacy, Adult and Non-Formal Education (NMEC), Prof. Akpama Simon Ibor, in a statement, said the Commission is committed to the cause of eradicating illiteracy in the country.
“To this end, the Commission had embarked on advocacy and community awareness on the establishment of girl child’s right to basic education facilities in the six geopolitical zones.
“The campaign has been completed in the three northern zones, Birinin Kebbi, Yola and FCT. The train has moved to southern zones.
“The southern zone advocacy and campaign commenced from Owerri, Imo State, in conjuction with 10 Miles Resources Limited, Offices of the First Lady of Imo State, and Commissioner of Woman Affairs and Social Welfare.”
He stated that in Imo State campaign, Parents, traditional rulers, educational sectors, teachers, and principals, students were presented with school bags, sandals, texbooks, sanitary wears, and many other things.
“The Civil Society Organisations (CSOs) were not left out in the advocacy. We used the campaign with the stakeholders to advocate and highlight the importance of Girl Child education in our country,” he said.
