The immediate past Imo State deputy governor, Engr Gerald Irona, may remain in prison as the state government failed to enlist his case before the Owerri High Court Registry for hearing yesterday. The legal team of the ex- deputy governor, who had hoped to argue for his bail, were disappointed yesterday, when they got to the Owerri High Court, only to be informed that the arraignment could not go on as earlier anticipated, because the Imo State government failed to enlist the case file at the court registry for hearing.
The Imo State Peoples Democratic Party’s (PDP ) Legal Adviser, Mr Kissinger Ikeokwu, who was in court, disclosed that the ex-deputy governor would now be arraigned today.
He said: “The arraignment will now take place on Wednesday. We had filed on Friday, and when we got to the court on Tuesday, we discovered that the arraignment will no longer take place today (Tuesday), as the matter was not enlisted in court for the day. The case file has not been brought to the court. He will now be arraigned on Wednesday,” he stated. The ex-deputy governor, who is facing alleged felony charges and terrorism and confiscation of state property preferred against him by the Imo State government was, last Thursday, remanded in prison custody by an Owerri Magistrate presided by C.N Ezerioha. He was billed to be arraigned before justice S. I Opara of the Owerri High Court yesterday, but the proposed arraignment could not take place.
