From Aniekan Aniekan, Calabar
A former national publicity secretary of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Venatius Ikem, has been reelected as the Cross River State chairman of the party.
Ikem was reelected in a state congress in Calabar, which had delegates from the 18 local government areas of the state.
Announcing the results, Jones Onyeriri, chairman of the electoral panel, said Ikem won with 1,509 votes. He emerged alongside 38 other state executive committee members.
The newly reelected chairman said going forward, they hope to correct their mistakes and do better for the party. “It’s time to put our house together, begin to rebuild and prepare for the task ahead. We did a lot to sustain the party to where it is in the state and with this new mandate, it’s a new charge to rethink our vision for the party.”
He thanked the Congress committee for undertaking their assignment with diligence and said they should not be surprised when they come back and Cross River becomes a PDP state.
Dignitaries, who graced the congress include Senator Jarigbe Agom Jarigbe, the lawmaker representing Cross River North in the national assembly, as well as Godwin Offiono, member representing Ogoja/Yala Federal Constituency.
Others include Senator Sandy Onor and Professor Zana Akpagu as well as former deputy governor of Cross River State, Efiok Cobham.
The state congress was also monitored by the Resident Electoral Commissioner for Cross River State, Johnson Alalibo.
Meanwhile, Prof. Sandy Onor, has said the party still has a huge momentum in the state.
Prof Onor disclosed this after the successful outcome of the 2025 state congress of the party in Calabar.
“All the ingredients of success have been epitomised here…
We had a proper panel duly certified and sent by the National Working Committee, especially from the office of the National Organising Secretary, which is mandated to undertake this responsibility.
“You can see the PDP still has a huge momentum in our state and the future is beautiful and bright. It’s very clear to those who did not participate that this is the direction,” Professor Onor said.
He appealed to party men, who did not participate, to continue to make the party a united umbrella.
He also expressed confidence that the new executive would do very well and tasked them to build together and carry everyone along.
