IHS Nigeria, UNICEF partner to boost digital literacy in 200 Lagos schools

IHS Nigeria, in partnership with the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) and the Lagos State Government, has commenced a digital literacy and school connectivity programme targeting 200 public schools across Lagos State.

The initiative covers 150 secondary schools and 50 primary schools across the state’s three senatorial districts. It includes digital literacy training for principals and teachers, as well as the distribution and installation of 200 internet routers in participating schools.
The programme is being implemented by Focus Teens Foundation (FTF).

Speaking at the launch of the training programme in Ikeja, Director of Sustainability at IHS Nigeria, Titilope Oguntuga, said the initiative was designed to improve access to digital education and equip teachers with skills needed to integrate technology into classroom learning.

She noted that many schools still face challenges related to internet connectivity and the effective use of digital tools, adding that the programme seeks to address both issues through infrastructure support and capacity building.

According to Oguntuga, the Lagos phase forms part of a wider national rollout aimed at training more than 1,600 teachers and distributing 800 routers across schools in several states.

She said the programme would subsequently be extended to Kano, Akwa Ibom, Niger, Imo, Oyo, Ondo and other states.
UNICEF representative Bala Dada commended the initiative, saying improved digital literacy and internet access would help students and teachers participate more effectively in computer-based examinations such as the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME), the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) and the National Examinations Council (NECO) examinations.

He said the programme would provide teachers with digital skills and resources needed to support learning in schools.

Also speaking, Permanent Secretary of the Lagos State Ministry of Education, Abisola Dokunmu-Adegbite, represented by Director Abiola Aberuagba, said internet connectivity had become an essential tool for education and digital learning.

She assured stakeholders that the facilities provided under the programme would be properly utilised.
One of the beneficiaries, Folawiyo George-Taylor, a teacher at Ikorodu Senior High School, said the training would enhance her digital literacy skills and improve technology-enabled teaching and learning.

The initiative is part of ongoing efforts to expand access to digital learning infrastructure and strengthen digital competencies among teachers and students in public schools.
