Commissioner of Police, Osun State, Ibrahim Gotan, has warned criminals to repent or face the “baptismal fire.” He told the Inspector General of Police [IGP] Conference in Abuja, that the command arrested 30 suspected armed robbers, kidnappers and cultists.

He said: “The command is ready to expose unrepentant criminals. The command has demonstrated an unwavering commitment to safeguarding lives and properties. We have launched the Violent Crime Response Unit (VCRU), in line with the directive of IGP Olatunji Disu. It is part of sustained efforts to strengthen security and the fight against violent crimes.

“The VCRU is aimed at establishing a more coordinated, efficient, and intelligence-led framework for responding to violent crimes such as armed robbery, kidnapping, cultism and other recordable violent offences.

“It is also expected to operate at all times in full compliance with constitutional provisions, the Nigeria Police Act 2020, other related laws and applicable international human rights standards, while remaining accountable and serving as a bridge of trust between the police and the public.

“The command has continued to intensify efforts in combating crime through proactive policing, intelligence gathering and swift response to distress calls. As a result of these sustained operations, the command successfully apprehended 20 suspects in connection with series of criminal activities in the state.

“I have warned officers against the use of torture in conducting investigations on suspects. We have charged some of the suspects in court, while other suspects are under investigation. Osun is calm and safe with the cooperation of the citizens. We are ready for the election in the state.  We encourage all the parties to maintain peace during campaign.

“Anti-Cultism Squad (ACQ) busted a gang of cultists and arrested eight suspected thugs terrorising IIoro community in Ilesa. Operatives of A Division, Ede and SCID detectives arrested suspected kidnappers, and armed robbers along Ojo-Arare Road and recovered a stolen motorcycle. Ten suspected armed robbers were along Gbongan-Ife Expressway when police raided hideouts of criminals

“We have stepped up night patrols, aimed at reinforcing commitment to serving and protecting the community. I have ordered officers to stay alert and be proactive in preventing crime and ensuring public safety. Officers to conduct patrol with diligence, courtesy, and to respect the rights of citizens.

“We will assess the operational effectiveness of the units, identify challenges and implement effective solutions. The strategy is to strengthen community policing and enhance security measures within the state

“Officers have been directed to be professional, firm and courteous in the discharge of their duties and to imbibe community policing. They are also advised on discipline and integrity as core values that officers must uphold.
