The founder and creative director of Softouch Couture, Odebunmi Ifedayo Fadekemi, has emphasized the importance of having some formal training in fashion designing.
Although she studied Computer Science at ESPAM Formation University, Republic of Benin, she was trained in fashion designing.
“I learnt fashion while I was in university from a family friend. Then I went deeply by going to a fashion school called Felenge Couture, ” she said.
Fadekemi, who did her mandatory national youth service in 2016 in Ibadan, the capital of Oyo State, has clocked nine years as a professional fashion designer, even though her business was registered in 2017.
On the inspiration behind her brand name, she offered an insight: “My brand name used to be Dayo’s Clothing before I thought of taking my name to another level, I mean like what everyone all over the world can pronounce because I see myself internationally while starting. I needed a brand name that is meaningful to the ear.”
She continued: “On that fateful day, I was listening to a ‘Soft Work’, a song that was just released by Falz, the Nigerian musician in 2015. I fell in love with the name ‘Soft’ and I decided to put it down with other names I have been compiling in my notebook. I met with my boyfriend back then, now my fiancé, I gave him the list that ‘Oh I want to change my business name,’ that we should pick together. To cut the story short, he also picked ‘Soft.’ Then we were like, ‘Why just soft?’ We concluded by adding ‘touch’ to it.”
Fadekemi who is also the brain behind Ivory Men, and My Soft Ivory, said her clothes are pocket-friendly. She further hinted that she will soon be unveiling a new collection of 10 wedding dresses.
The Softouch fashion brand has a long list of celebrity clients that include Nollywood actors; Anita Joseph, Nkechi Blessing, Dayo Amusan and Funmi Awelewa.
Also, the trio of Big Brother Naija reality stars Saskay, Chichi and Maria Chike are among the brand’s customers list.
The Fashion Entrepreneur, however, is still aspiring to add more celebrities to her clientele.
“I would love to style Tiwa Savage, Chioma Ikokwu and Toke Makinwa,” she mused.
While the brand recently showcased on the Zeena and Zara fashion show,
Its CEO said she’s looking forward to gracing the prestigious shows such as London Fashion Week, London Fashion Gala and the GT Fashion Show.
Her plan for the future of the Soft Touch brand, she said, is “to be global.”
