The All Progressives Congress has criticised Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, over his reference to the “Operation Wetie” crisis during an opposition summit held in Ibadan, describing the remark as inciting and historically misplaced.

APC National Secretary, Ajibola Basiru, said the governor’s comment at the Ibadan summit was irresponsible and lacked proper context, warning that such statements could inflame tensions.

“It is irresponsible for a governor to make inciting statements without context,” Basiru stated.

He noted that the historical crisis Makinde referenced was rooted in electoral malpractice, arguing that current opposition complaints do not reflect similar conditions.

“Today, the opposition is simply belly-aching because the APC is organised while they are in streams,” he said.

Also reacting, the party’s South-West National Vice Chairman, Isaacs Kekemeke, said the remark could be interpreted as a veiled threat of violence ahead of the 2027 elections.

He dismissed claims that Nigeria is drifting toward a one-party state under President Bola Tinubu, insisting that the country’s political space remains open and competitive.

“It is a figment of hyperactive imagination for any member of the opposition to insinuate a one-party state in a country where over 20 political parties are on the register of the Independent National Electoral Commission,” he said.
