Bashir Ahmad, former Special Assistant on Digital Communications to ex-President Muhammadu Buhari, has debunked a recurring claim that he was a recharge card seller prior to his appointment.

He made the clarification in an X post on Monday.

Ahmad has frequently been mocked by political opponents for his alleged humble beginnings, particularly the claim that he once sold recharge cards.

The claim recently resurfaced after the ex-presidential aide donated N5 million to a cause.

Describing the claim as inaccurate, he maintained that he had nothing against recharge card sellers and would have got into the business if he had the opportunity.

Addressing a social media user who resurrected the claim, Ahmad said, “I don’t think I’ve ever addressed this before. Still, for the record to clarify the person you quoted, you that amplified his message and anyone else making that assumption based on their own perspective or information, I was never a recharge card seller.”

He added, “I have never been involved in anything similar and even if I had, I see absolutely no reason to be ashamed of it.

“In fact, I sometimes wish I had the opportunity back then, because I know people who started by selling recharge cards and went on to achieve great success, some even building companies that produced the cards or becoming partners with telecom companies.”
