‘I perform the crowd as much as the music’ – DJ Djdimplenipple

Nigerian DJ sensation, Rachel Oluwabukola Martins popularly known as DJ Djdimplenipple, has offered fresh insight into what truly defines her craft, revealing that beyond music selection, her greatest strength lies in her ability to read the crowd and respond in real time.

In a chat with reporters, the Lagos-based DJ said her performances are built on instinct, connection, and a deep understanding of audience energy — a skill she believes separates good DJs from unforgettable ones.

“Anyone can play good music,” she said. “But not everyone can read a room. For me, DJing is about understanding the mood, the reactions, the body language — and then responding instantly. That’s where the magic is.”

Since stepping into the DJ scene in 2019, Djdimplenipple has grown into a commanding stage presence, known for her vibrant persona and electrifying sets. But according to her, the secret behind her success is not just what she plays, but when and how she plays it.

“There are moments when the crowd wants to go wild, and moments when they just want to vibe. You have to feel that shift without anyone telling you. I’m constantly watching, listening, adjusting. It’s like a conversation without words,” she explained.

A graduate of Rise Academy in South Africa, she credits her training for sharpening her technical skills, but insists that experience has been her greatest teacher.

“No academy can teach you crowd psychology the way real-life performances can. Every show teaches you something new about people and energy,” she noted.

Popularly known as “The Dancing DJ,” Djdimplenipple integrates movement into her sets, using her physical expression as a bridge between the music and the audience. She describes this as a deliberate strategy to break barriers and pull people deeper into the experience.

“When I dance, I’m inviting the crowd to let go. It’s not just about standing behind the decks — it’s about leading the vibe, showing people it’s okay to feel the music fully,” she said.

Her ability to connect has earned her performances at major events such as Warri Again, Okochiri Festivals, Tape Lagos, and Red Room, alongside appearances at exclusive private events. Her UK tour further demonstrated her adaptability, as she successfully engaged international audiences with different musical tastes.

Looking ahead, the DJ says her focus is on mastering the art of live connection while expanding her global footprint.

“I want to get to a point where no matter where I am in the world, I can step on stage and instantly connect with the crowd,” she said. “That’s the real power of a DJ — turning strangers into one energy.”

With her growing reputation and distinct performance philosophy, DJ Djdimplenipple continues to redefine what it means to be a modern DJ — one crowd, one moment, one unforgettable experience at a time.
