I have nothing against Funke Akindele – Kunle Afolayan

Nollywood filmmaker and actor Kunle Afolayan says he has nothing against his colleague, Funke Akindele, after she took offence at a statement he made about her.

Afolayan had, while speaking at the Lagos Business of Film Summit, criticised the growing expectation that filmmakers must dance, create skits, and maintain constant online visibility to promote their cinema releases.

Saying it was draining, the director added that the obsession with box office numbers and viral marketing no longer appeals to him.

“It is draining. I want to make a film if you guarantee me that I don’t have to dance to sell that film,” Afolayan said partly.

Irked by his remarks, Funke Akindele posted the following on her Instagram page, “I’m not the one hindering your progress. Ka rin ka po, yiye ni n ye ni.”

“Go ahead and create alternative promotion or marketing strategies for your business, or hire a company to handle it. You can do it!

“The opportunities are endless. I’m focused on mine, and I have faith in God’s plan for me,” she added.

Responding in an interview on Arise TV, Afolayan revealed that Akindele called him, yelling and warning him to stop mentioning her in interviews.

“She called and she said, ‘Mr Afolayan, I know you don’t like me. But don’t mention my name in your interviews.”

Asked if Akindele was angry, Afolayan replied that “she was yelling”.

He added, “I have absolutely nothing against Funke. Last week, I was in Kaduna… and I was doing a masterclass. And I was addressing young people.

“And I clearly said to them that if you want to adopt a model that I think will work for you now, follow Funke Akindele’s model.”
