The 81 Division of the Nigerian Army has painted a solemn picture of how an alleged reckless driver ran into troops of the force attached to the Myhoung Barracks in Lagos, killing one and inflicting injuries on many.
The Division said the soldiers were on the monthly route march designed to enhance the operational readiness of the soldiers and also determine their physical fitness A soldier was killed and several others sustained injuries after a private vehicle rammed into troops participating in the Nigerian Army’s Bi-Annual Route March near Myhoung Barracks, Yaba, Lagos on Friday. The General Officer Commanding (GOC), 81 Division, Maj.-Gen. Farouk Mijinyawa, expressed his condolences to the family of the deceased and wished the injured personnel a speedy recovery.
“The deceased has been deposited in the mortuary, while those injured are receiving medical treatment at the 68 Nigerian Army Reference Hospital, Yaba,” Mijinyawa said. He further disclosed that the 81 Division Military Police, in collaboration with other security agencies, has launched a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding the accident.
While calling for calm, Mijinyawa assured that the incident would not deter the Nigerian Army from fulfilling its mandate.
“The Division remains committed to continuous training and operational readiness despite this devastating loss. We will not waver in safeguarding lives and property within our Area of Responsibility (AoR) in line with our constitutional duties,” he added.
