Borrands, an innovative freelancing platform created to connect and empower students, was founded in 2023 and officially launched in mid-October 2024. The platform was inspired by a simple yet powerful question posed by its founder, Joan Ayubatonye Hassana Miebai: Why can’t students collaborate more easily?
Joan observed the challenges students faced when trying to connect, share skills, and support one another professionally. This realization sparked the idea for Borrands — a digital ecosystem where student freelancers could thrive. The platform provides opportunities for young people to monetize their talents, gain practical experience, and build professional networks while still pursuing their studies.
Since its inception, Borrands has made significant strides in transforming how students engage with the world of work. It has created a safe and efficient space for students across Nigeria to collaborate on meaningful projects, bridging the gap between academic learning and real-world application.
Joan’s leadership and vision recently earned her recognition on the national stage. On November 9, 2024, she appeared on AIT’s Weekend Show, where she was featured in the Entrepreneurship Spotlight segment to discuss Borrands’ mission and growing impact.
A native of Warri, Delta State, Joan proudly identifies with her Ijaw heritage, which fuels her determination and resilience. She credits her parents, Roseline and Felix Miebai, for their constant support and encouragement throughout her journey.
In addition to being a forward-thinking entrepreneur, Joan is a law student and an avid basketball player, exemplifying the balance between intellect, creativity, and physical vitality. Her passion extends beyond business — she aims to merge her entrepreneurial acumen with her future legal career to foster innovation and opportunity in both spaces.
