A 60-year-old man, Tajudeen Yusuf, was shot dead in Osogbo, Osun State, on Wednesday following a confrontation between suspected hoodlums and the security team of music star David Adeleke, popularly known as Davido.
The Osun State Police Command said the incident occurred shortly after Davido accompanied his uncle, Governor Ademola Adeleke, to the palace of the Ataoja of Osogbo, Oba Jimoh Olanipekun.
Adeleke had visited the monarch to present his certificate of return after winning the August 15 governorship election. The governor arrived at the palace at about 3:15 pm in a convoy of about 20 vehicles.
According to the police, trouble started after the visit when Adebayo Taoreed, popularly known as “Small Rugged”, allegedly attempted to gain access to Davido but was resisted by members of the singer’s security team.
The police described Taoreed as an ex-convict, suspected notorious thug and alleged member of the Eye confraternity. The confrontation reportedly attracted other suspected gang members in the area.
In a statement on Wednesday evening, Osun police spokesperson, Abiodun Ojelabi, said the suspects temporarily blocked the palace entrance and obstructed movement, although the governor’s convoy eventually left the area safely.
Ojelabi said the suspected gang members later left the area but allegedly shot Yusuf while fleeing.
“On Wednesday, 19th August 2026, at about 1600hrs, the Command received information that one Tajudeen Yusuf, male, aged 60 years, of Oke-Ayepe area, Osogbo, was shot by suspected hoodlums at Itaolokan area of Osogbo,” the statement reads.
The police spokesperson said officers were immediately deployed to the scene, where Yusuf was found “lying in a pool of blood”.
He was taken to the University Teaching Hospital, Osogbo, but doctors later pronounced him dead.
The incident came after an earlier attack on Governor Adeleke’s convoy, during which suspected hoodlums reportedly exchanged gunfire with the governor’s security personnel. No casualty was initially reported from that attack.
The Commissioner of Police (Election), Samuel Etaifo, condemned what he described as the “dastardly act” and said the command had launched a full-scale investigation while intensifying efforts to identify and arrest the fleeing suspects.
