Many Nigerians investing in home gyms are losing money to avoidable mistakes, according to fitness expert Sir Goodluck Obi, Chairman of Gategold Fitness Company.

Speaking to journalists in Lagos yesterday, Obi outlined three common errors he sees families make when setting up home fitness spaces.

“First, people buy fake or substandard equipment online because it is cheap. These machines often break down within months,” he said.
“Second, they purchase equipment that does not match their fitness goals or available space.
“Third, they set up the gym without proper guidance and therefore risk injury.”

Obi, whose company has supplied fitness equipment to homes and public gyms across Nigeria for nearly two decades, advised Nigerians to buy from trusted dealers who provide genuine brands, warranty, proper installation, and user training.

“Equipment without knowledge is dangerous. You must know how to use it safely and consistently to see results and avoid injury,” he added.

The fitness expert noted that Nigerians do not need a full commercial setup at home.
“A simple setup with a treadmill, adjustable dumbbells, and a bench can cover 80% of a family’s fitness needs,” he explained.

He further stressed the importance of consistency over expensive equipment.
“Buy right, set up right, and stay consistent. That is how a home gym works,” Obi concluded.
