The Sun Nigeria

HN clothings reaches for the stars with celestial motion

thumbnail-1

Chikodinaka Perpetua Chima looked upward for inspiration for HN Clothings latest collection- Celestial Motion but kept her feet firmly planted on the runway. The collection released March 14th 2024 offered an exploration of light, fluidity, and cosmic symbolism, seeking to position the brand within the language of universality rather than regional identity.

The first impression was one of scale. Chima introduced a series of flowing gowns in metallic silks and shimmery satins, each moving as if in orbit around the models themselves. The collection’s palette — silver, midnight blue, and muted gold — was carefully chosen, evoking both star-studded skies and the understated elegance of evening-wear. This was not fashion shouting for attention; it was fashion inviting the viewer to lean closer.

Midway into the presentation came the standout look: a floor-length navy gown with a sheer overlay, hand-stitched with sequins that caught the light like fragments of a constellation. It was a deliberate centrepiece, balancing spectacle with wearability, and proof of Chima’s growing confidence in design narrative. The craftsmanship was notable, though the layering around the bodice could have been better resolved to avoid occasional stiffness.

Where Celestial Motion excelled was in its restraint. Chima resisted the temptation to overload her pieces with accessories or exaggerated silhouettes. Instead, she allowed the fabrics’ natural sheen to serve as the collection’s focal point. This decision lent the presentation a maturity that stood in contrast to the maximalism of some of her earlier collections.

That said, the consistency of tone occasionally tipped into monotony. While cohesion is crucial in any collection, several of the mid-length metallic dresses blurred into one another, offering little differentiation. The collection might have benefitted from a sharper injection of contrast — perhaps through unexpected textures or cuts that could have kept the rhythm fresh.

Despite these lapses, Celestial Motion succeeded in its broader ambition: to suggest that Nigerian fashion can speak a universal language without losing its own cadence. Chima’s garments may not have reinvented the eveningwear vocabulary, but they placed HN Clothings firmly in conversation with global aesthetics, proving that her brand has the discipline to refine ideas and the imagination to dream beyond borders.

The rating 7.5/10 Polished, assured, but still searching for sharper moments of risk.

Celestial Motion was a poised, elegant collection that showed growth in restraint and execution. Though occasionally repetitive, it reinforced HN Clothings’ commitment to crafting fashion with both narrative and longevity.
