Heritage unveiled: Gbolahan Olanipekun’s solo exhibition in London

Nigerian artist delivers a powerful visual narrative of cultural memory, identity, and Excellence — the art world witnessed a profound cultural event this autumn as Gbolahan Olanipekun (OlaArt), one of Nigeria’s most compelling contemporary artists, presented his solo exhibition Heritage Unveiled in London.

This showcase offered a masterclass in visual storytelling, weaving together Yoruba cosmology, feminist discourse, and culture heritage across 5 meticulously crafted artwork.

Olanipekun’s work operates at the bridge of tradition and new experimentation, a mixture vividly expressed in this exhibition. The title collection Heritage Unveiled—a striking portrait of a woman bearing traditional tribal marks—serves as both aesthetic and identification. Here, the artist confronts the Western gaze while reclaiming indigenous signifiers of beauty and belonging. Few of the artworks exhibited are “Oju Aye” (The Eye of the World): A surreal globe with a watchful blue iris challenges viewers to reflect on power, perception, and humanity’s interconnectedness.

Curated by Babajide Shittu, the exhibition invited viewers into a meditative space, encouraging personal interpretation while evoking collective memory. The works employed bold symbolism, layered textures, and a compelling palette rooted in earth tones and sacred hues. The exhibition celebrated the richness of African heritage. “I wanted to open a portal,” said Olanipekun. “Not just to the past, but to the part of ourselves that remembers who we are, beyond geography or time. This is a spiritual return—an unveiling of what colonization tried to erase.”

Visitors and collectors from across London attended the exhibition, many praising its powerful storytelling, cultural authenticity, and timely relevance. Heritage Unveiled firmly established Gbolohan as one of the leading voices in contemporary African art, merging tradition with vision in a way that echo both locally and globally.
This exhibition marks advancement from Olanipekun’s earlier works shown at Lagos’ Thought Pyramid Art Centre and National Museum Abeokuta. Where previous pieces leaned on cultural pageantry, Heritage Unveiled demonstrates newfound conceptual depth.
