The Human and Environmental Development Agenda (HEDA Resource Centre), in collaboration with anti-corruption agencies and civil society organisations, has called on Nigerian youths to rise immediately against corrupt practices in the interest of future generations. The call was made on Monday as Nigeria joined the world to mark International Anti-Corruption Day.

Speaking at the public unveiling of the 9th edition of the Compendium of 100 High-Profile Corruption Cases in Nigeria, the Executive Secretary of HEDA, Mr Sulaimon Arigbabu, reminded participants that young people worldwide have shown remarkable courage, creativity and digital savvy in holding power to account.

“Youths’ energy, innovation, and impatience with the status quo represent an opportunity we cannot afford to ignore. Any meaningful future for Nigeria must be built with them, not merely for them. As an organisation deeply invested in building a future anchored on integrity, we reaffirm our commitment to empowering young people with the knowledge, tools and platforms they need to resist corruption and champion accountability in their communities,” he said.

Arigbabu described corruption as a development crisis that undermines governance, erodes public trust, weakens institutions and deprives the most vulnerable of opportunities and services. He explained that the compendium, now in its ninth edition, has become an indispensable reference for researchers, journalists, lawyers, policymakers and citizens tracking major corruption cases.

“This year’s edition also includes high-profile cases across Africa, capturing ongoing trials, concluded matters, forfeitures, judicial interventions and systemic challenges such as delays, political interference and procedural bottlenecks,” he noted, urging lawyers, media, civil society, law enforcement and especially youths to use the document for advocacy, research and policy reform.

In a keynote address titled “Youths as Catalysts of Integrity: Building a Corruption-Free Future for Nigeria”, immediate past Chairman of the Kano State Public Complaints and Anti-Corruption Commission, Barr. Muhyi Magaji, urged young people to be bold and consistent in demanding accountable and transparent governance.

The Head of Legal, ICPC Lagos Office, Mrs Yvonne William-Mbata, speaking on “Youth as Game Changer: Innovation Pathways to Fight Corruption”, charged youths to see themselves as vessels of positive change and not to remain passive. “Corruption is a very big challenge for us as Nigerians. This fight must be sustained, inclusive and deliberate,” she said.

Representatives of the National Orientation Agency (NOA) and Lagos State Consumer Protection Agency (LASCOPA) also pledged continued support in promoting integrity and protecting citizens from exploitation linked to corrupt practices.

This year’s International Anti-Corruption Day theme, “Uniting with Youth against Corruption: Shaping Tomorrow’s Integrity”, underscored HEDA’s launch of a new youth-focused alliance to deepen civic engagement in the anti-corruption struggle.
