Harris launches historic presidential bid as democratic convention kicks off

Vice President Kamala Harris’ official presidential campaign officially began on Monday with the opening of the Democratic National Convention in Chicago. Tens of thousands of people are anticipated to attend the four-day event, which is taking place in the midst of both protest and joy.

While Democrats aim to project unity and enthusiasm for Harris, the convention is also attracting large-scale demonstrations, many focused on the Biden administration’s policies regarding the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. Protests are expected to draw thousands to the streets of Chicago throughout the week.

President Joe Biden, who stepped aside from seeking re-election, will take centre stage on Monday night to deliver a prime-time address. His speech will focus on making the case for Harris’ candidacy and for defeating former President Donald Trump in the upcoming election.

According to insiders, Biden will be joined onstage by Harris as part of a symbolic passing of the bat, signifying the party’s ongoing support for their just nominated candidate. Harris is slated to deliver a much-awaited speech outlining her aspirations for the country on Thursday, the day she formally accepts the nomination.

“I’ve been to every convention since I was able to vote, and I can say I’ve not felt this kind of energy and electricity at any convention other than the one for Barack Obama,” said Illinois Governor JB Pritzker, reflecting the palpable excitement surrounding Harris’ candidacy.

Harris’ campaign has accelerated with record-breaking funding, record-breaking rally attendance, and a change in opinion polls in key battleground states. She recently went on a bus trip through Pennsylvania with her running mate, Governor Tim Walz of Minnesota, which energized supporters even more and highlighted the campaign’s emphasis on critical electoral battlegrounds.

To deflect attention and highlight policy areas where Republicans feel they have an edge, the Trump campaign intends to counter-program the Democratic convention with a number of events in pivotal states. Trump will be visiting Michigan, according to his itinerary.
