The Gombe State Command of the Nigeria Police has arrested two suspects for allegedly selling adulterated rice to unsuspecting buyers in the state. According to the police, the suspects were arrested following a tip-off from concerned citizens.
Gombe State Police Public Relations Officer(PPRO) in a statement through ASP Sharif Sa’ad, explained that investigation revealed that the suspects had been mixing original rice and chaff to increase their profit margin, with total disregard to the conditions of the buyers.
He said, “On February 24, 2024, at about 11:00 am, Policemen from Akko Division, acting on credible intelligence, intercepted and arrested Bashir Haruna, 35, of Dubai Quarters, Gombe, and Mohammed Isah, 54, of Jibulu Quarters Kumo, Akko LGA of Gombe state in possession of 57 bags of mixed rice and chaff, with the intent to deceive the public and sell it as rice at the market price.
During interrogation, the suspects confessed to mixing several bags containing this mixture and selling them. The suspects have since been charged to Court.
In view of this new trend, the Commissioner of Police (CP) Gombe State Command, CP Hayatu Usman, advised the general public to be wary of criminal elements and be vigilant when buying grains in sacks to avoid falling prey to such scams,” Sharif stated.
