Gumel appointed BSWF Chairman

Botswana has launched a multi-billion-dollar Sovereign Wealth Fund (BSWF) to diversify its economy and reduce dependence on diamond mining, appointing Nigerian business leader Farouk Gumel as the fund’s inaugural Board Chairman.

The launch was announced by President Duma Gideon Boko at the Office of the President in Gaborone recently.

He described the new fund as a cornerstone of his administration’s vision for economic transformation and long-term prosperity. “The launch of the Botswana Sovereign Wealth Fund represents an investment in the future of our country. It is about creating jobs, driving growth, and ensuring that our nation’s wealth works for all Batswana. We are sending a message to the world that Botswana is ready to compete, invest, and lead,” he said.

The BSWF will channel revenues from natural resources into high-impact investments across infrastructure, renewable energy, healthcare, and technology, positioning the country for inclusive growth. Analysts expect the fund to quickly rank among Africa’s most significant sovereign wealth funds.

Farouk Gumel, Vice Chairman of Tropical General Investments (TGI) Group and former Chairman of Nigeria’s Sovereign Investment Authority (NSIA), will lead a distinguished board comprising top local and international figures from government, finance, law, and industry. Their mandate is to oversee governance, strategy, and risk management to ensure the fund delivers on its objectives.

Accepting his appointment, Gumel pledged to steer the board with integrity and a focus on value creation. “We are setting our sights on a future built on transparency, good governance, and a steadfast dedication to Botswana’s prosperity. The Board is committed to delivering lasting value, seeking global opportunities and investing for the future,” he said.

The fund’s establishment signals Botswana’s determination to build resilience beyond its diamond industry, while strengthening investor confidence and positioning the nation as a leader in sustainable wealth management on the continent.
