The Rector, Federal Polytechnic, Oko, Anambra State, Dr Francisca Nwafulugo, has appealed to the Federal Government to save the institution from the ravaging impact of gully erosion threatening lives and property in the polytechnic.
She said urgent government intervention was needed to halt the devastating effects of seasonal erosion which has continued to wreck unimaginable havoc to existing infrastructure in the institution.
The Rector made the appeal during the commissioning of various TETFUND sponsored projects in the institution by the Minister of State for Education, Goodluck Opiah at the Permanent Site of the institution.
The commissioned projects include multi-purpose hall, School of Renewable Energy, ICT building, chemical engineering laboratory building and agricultural engineering technology building. Other projects were the deans complex, food technology and a modern lecture block.
The Rector said the commissioned projects were in line with the vision of her administration to bequeath enviable infrastructural development to the institution. She thanked the governing council for the support given to her administration.
She said her administration enhanced the pedigree of academic programmes of the polytechnic and made the institution 100 percent accreditation complaint. In addition to accreditation of all existing programmes, he explained that her administration mounted new programmes like Chemical Engineering and Horticulture which have been approved by the regulatory body, National Board for Technical Education (NBTE).
Minister of State For Education, who was elated by the developmental strides, said the projects would in no small measure enhance teaching and learning, and prepare youths for global competitiveness.
Opiah applauded the leadership of the polytechnic for the projects, describing them as iconic. He lauded the efforts of the Executive Secretary of TETFund, Architect Sonny Echono and his team in effectively discharging the mandate of the Fund for the continuous development of public tertiary education in the country.
He said over N679 million was invested in six iconic projects that were commissioned in the polytechnic and thanked President Muhammadu Buhari for his unwavering commitment to building a thriving and robust education sector.
Opiah said TETFUND has done exceptionally well in its intervention activities across tertiary institutions spread in the country.
He said, no fewer than 101 lecturers of the polytechnic had been sponsored for doctorate degree programme in both local and foreign universities by TETFund, while 60 lecturers were sponsored for Masters degrees.
Also speaking, the Executive Secretary, TETFund, Architect Sunny Echono, said the completed projects were a testimony to the determination of the Buhari administration to improve the ranking status of Nigerian tertiary institutions and encourage academic excellence among students.
