A new grassroots movement aimed at mobilising Nigerian workers and citizens toward national development was officially unveiled on Thursday in Abuja, with organisers calling on Nigerians to unite behind policies they say will secure the country’s economic future.

The movement, Working People United, was formally launched at the PTD Hotel in Utako during a ceremony attended by labour leaders, professionals, youth representatives, market women and members of the media.

Speaking at the event, the convener of the movement, Prince Williams Akporeha, described the initiative as a platform designed to amplify the voice of Nigeria’s working class and promote active citizen participation in governance.

“Today marks a historic moment as we formally unveil Working People United, a grassroots movement built on the strength, resilience and aspirations of ordinary Nigerians,” Akporeha said during his address.

According to him, the movement seeks to bring together workers, artisans, traders, farmers, transporters, professionals and other productive citizens who form the backbone of Nigeria’s economy.

He explained that the organisation was created with a patriotic mission to mobilise Nigerians across sectors of the economy to take part in shaping the nation’s future.

“Working People United was established with a clear mission to galvanise and mobilise Nigerians across all sectors of the economy to actively participate in shaping the future of our country,” he said.

Akporeha also said the movement aims to support leadership that prioritises national development, economic stability and the welfare of the masses.

Highlighting the current administration’s policies, he commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for what he described as bold steps toward repositioning Nigeria for sustainable growth since assuming office on May 29, 2023.

“Leadership is never about choosing the easy path; it is about choosing the path that secures the future of the nation,” he said.

He noted that the reforms introduced by the administration demonstrate courage and foresight, adding that several initiatives have been designed to benefit ordinary Nigerians.

According to him, government programmes such as social investment initiatives and direct cash transfer schemes are helping millions of vulnerable households meet basic needs while broader economic reforms take effect.

“These targeted interventions are helping to protect the most vulnerable members of society while broader economic reforms take effect,” Akporeha explained.

He also pointed to policies aimed at improving access to credit for small businesses, traders and artisans, noting that such measures are gradually expanding opportunities at the grassroots level.

“These initiatives recognise that Nigeria’s economy is driven not only by large corporations but also by millions of hardworking small-scale entrepreneurs,” he said.

Akporeha stated that Working People United would focus on enlightening citizens about government reforms while encouraging constructive engagement between the government and the people.

“As we look ahead to 2027, this movement will play a critical role in ensuring that the progress currently being made is sustained and enhanced,” he said.

He urged Nigerians to reject divisive politics and misinformation, and instead embrace unity, responsible citizenship and constructive dialogue.

“We must reject the politics of misinformation, division and empty promises. Instead, we must embrace responsible citizenship, constructive dialogue and collective national purpose,” he said.

Akporeha stressed that the strength of the movement lies in ordinary Nigerians — including mechanics, traders, farmers, drivers, professionals and young people whose aspirations will shape the nation’s future.

He concluded by calling on Nigerians who believe in progress and national development to join the movement and work collectively toward building a stronger nation.

“I call on all Nigerians who believe in progress, stability and national development to join this movement,” he said. “Together, we will amplify the voice of the working people and build a stronger Nigeria for generations yet unborn.”
