Group seeks youths’ representation in governance

Ika Youth Assembly

A Delta State-based pressure group, the Ika Youth Assembly, has added its voice to the ‘Not Too Young to Lead’ campaign.

The group said youths across the country were fed up with saturation of the political leaders whose ideas had become senile thereby retarding growth and development of the country.

Addressing a press conference at Agbor, Ika South Local Government Area of Delta State, convener of the Assembly, Aliogo Chubuzor, said the impacts of youths are not being felt because of lack of leadership opportunity.

Chubuzor argued that if civil servants could be made to retire at a certain age or by a certain number of years in service, “it will not be out of place for politicians to also quit the scene at some point in time to give the younger ones a chance.

“If you look at it very closely, you will observe that some of those personalities who were at the helm of affairs either at independence in 1960 or after the civil war between 1970 and 1985 are still around calling the shots in various positions of leadership.

“Meanwhile, those civil servants who worked with them at the time have been retired either voluntarily or compulsorily by the system.

“What we are saying is that it is time to give the youths opportunity to lead because most of those at the helm of affairs today were youths when they got the opportunity. And it is time for them to exit for new crop of leaders who will inject new ideas to develop the country,” he said.

To this end, Chubuzor disclosed that the group would be organising the maiden edition of youth leadership understanding summit with the theme: ‘The Role of Youths in Politics and Good Governance and the Impact of Elected Office Holders in Community Development.’

He said the summit which would draw discussants from various fields of endeavour would hold at Agbor on September 30, adding that it is aimed at sensitising youths ahead of the 2019 general election.
