From George Onyejiuwa, Owerri

Succour has come the way of distraught blind man, Mr Ndubisi Duruaku, after a civil society organization, Stand for Humanity Foundation, rescued his wife and twin daughters, Akuyoma and Nwakaego Duruaku, who were allegedly detained for two months after delivery, due to his inability to pay the medical bill.

His wife, Chiamaka  Duruaku, gave birth to the twins on 1st June, 2025, at Totalcare Hospital, Akwakuma, in Owerri West Council Area of Imo State, and the healthcare facility charged a bill of N600,000, which the visually impaired man could not pay.

Somehow, his predicament and public appeal for financial assistance became known to the foundation, which then began mobilizing donations from public-spirited individuals.

The founder of the organization, Mr Chidiebube Okeoma, told Sunday Sun that his organization stepped into the matter on August 1st and after two days, the funds were raised with the babies being driven home by the organization.

“We are happy to announce that the two months old twin girls, Akuyoma and Nwakaego Duruaku, held at TotalCare Hospital at Akwakuma in Owerri have been taken home by our organization, Stand For Humanity Foundation.

“The outstanding bill of N600,000 was paid by a  compassionate Nigerian who preferred to remain anonymous.

“We drove the babies and their mother home at Akabo in the Ikeduru Local Government Area of Imo State. We bought the family foodstuff that would last for months. These include baby food, diapers and provisions. We also gave them cash donations made by other compassionate Nigerians.

Continuing, he said, “On Sunday, we took the family for thanksgiving at Redeemed Christian Church of God, King’s Court Mega Tabernacle Parish at Orji in Owerri to thank God for using people of goodwill to rescue them.

“By this act, we have shown this vulnerable family love and demonstrated that humanity is kind and not wicked. Our organization, going forward is interested in these kids welfare. When it is time for them to go to school, they will go to school.

“We thank the management of the hospital for at least saving the lives of these babies and their mother. The woman went through a lot as she was rushed to the facility as an emergency case. Caesarean section was conducted on her and she was infused with eight units of blood for her to be alive,” Okeoma said.

Commenting the issue, a member of the public who was aware of the family’s predicament and also donated but strictly requested not be identified in print said: “To be a poor man in a country like Nigeria without social welfare system to help the vulnerable her citizens is bad enough, and to be equally poor and blind is a tragedy.”

Meanwhile, another newborn baby girl, Amarachi Ngerem, who was similarly detained has had her hospital bill of N800,000 paid, following the death of her twin sister 24 hours after delivery.

The amount was donated by Dr Chima Matthew Amadi of The Mazi Organization, through the Stand for Humanity Foundation, which initiated an online fund raising advocacy for her, to enable her leave the hospital after a long stay.

Baby Amarachi was held in a hospital in Owerri, Imo State, for one month after delivery because of her parents’ inability to pay the hospital bill.

Born as a set of twin baby girls, Amarachi survived, but the sister died after 24 hours.

In statement in Owerri, the Imo State capital, Chidiebube Okeoma, founder and president of the foundation explained that Amarachis’s medical bill had been cleared and additional funds donated by other individuals given to her parents, adding that the family has since returned home in Obazu Mbieri in the Mbaitoli Local Government Area of the state.
