Some Members of the House of Representatives, led by Hon. Billy Osawaru (Edo State), have been berated and  threatened with recalls, over their percieved support for the Group Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Ltd, Mele Kyari, and the Chief Executive of the Nigeria Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA), Farouk Ahmed.

The Economic Freedom Assembly (EFA) slammed Osawaru and his colleagues for suggesting that Mele Kyari, and the NMDPRA boss Farouk Ahmed, should continue in their positions despite allegations of corruption in the oil sector.

In a statement jointly signed by its National President, Dr Pedro Osahon, and Secretary General, Comrade Isah Suleiman Kadiri, the group stated that the lawmakers’ call for Kyari and Ahmed to remain in office was “against the dictates of common sense and the glaring failure, incompetence, and ineptitude” of the duo, who have “compounded the woes of the masses.”

The group noted that the hardship, hunger, and anger in the land were “a result of the massive failure, corruption, and mismanagement being witnessed in the oil industry today.”

The group suggested that instead of the lawmakers trying to attract the wrath of the masses, they should resign from representing their federal constituencies and allow the NNPC and NMDPRA bosses to leave their positions as well.

“The recent declaration of support by a member of the House of Representatives, Hon. Billy Famous Osawaru (Edo State) and his purported 49 other colleagues, for the Group Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Ltd, Mele Kyari, and the Chief Executive of the Nigeria Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA), Farouk Ahmed, is against the interests of the people and self-serving,” the statement reads.

“The actions of Osawaru and his purported co-travellers demonstrate that they are working against the people’s interests while holding positions of honour within the National Assembly. How else can one explain their misguided support for Kyari to remain in office despite the glaring failure, incompetence and ineptitude of him and his goons who have compounded the woes of the masses?

“How can we explain that Kyari, who was part of the subsidy regime under former President Muhammadu Buhari, is still involved in the current mess under President Asiwaju Bola Ahmed, causing the nation a high level of hardship, hunger, and anger due to the massive failure, corruption, and mismanagement in the oil industry today?

“Money has exchanged hands and the actors are out to do rubbish. There’s news going round town that Osawaru and other lawmakers collected $10 Million to kill the ongoing call for the sack of the Group CEO of NNPC Limited and the MD, NMDPRA. They are supposed to represent the interests of the people, not antagonize the people for their selfish gains.

“Instead of these dishonourable personalities trying to provoke the anger of the people, they should resign and return to their federal constituencies, allowing Kyari and Ahmed to step down. In no distant time, Nigerians may be forced to call for their recall from the parliament.”

The group insisted that Kyari and Ahmed should resign and step down from their positions, warning that they may face public disgrace if they do not.

The statement added: “Kyari and Ahmed need to recognize the public sentiment and step down for the greater good of the country. Osawaru and his purported 49 other members of the House of Representatives and those who support them are seeking personal favour, but they will eventually be abandoned when they are no longer in office.”
